A Single Man

A Single man is a rare find, and quite unexpected. Its based on a novel of the same title by Christopher Isherwood. It was adapted for the screen by Tom Ford, as well as being directed and produced by Ford. Ford who is a fashion designer as well makes a stunning debut. His stamp is all over this extremely stylish movie that subtly displays a life in the day of a man who has lost the love of his life. The players include Colin Firth as the title character and four time academy award nominee Julianne Moore as his best friend Charley.

A Single Man is about George Falconer, a college professor living in Los Angeles in 1962. The film opens with George awaking to another day, haunted by the memory of his decesed lover. A Single Man has a day-in-the-life structure, with George going through the motions of random encounters with friends, colleagues and strangers(Most notable is Julianne Moore as George's fag hag, Charlotte, and Nicholas Hoult as one of his students. The movie plays like an Afred Hitchcock movie and at times as an elaborate music video where the non-verbal speaks louder than dialogue could ever. The tension increases throughout the movie up until its shattering final moments.

This movie is a must see, its all about the appreication of life and how the past can consume us if we don't understand our purpose and have clarity on what the future can bring.
